Points For Öncü In Race One

Can Öncü took his Kawasaki Puccetti Racing Ninja ZX-6R to 11th place in the first WorldSSP race of the weekend at Autodrom Most.

One day before the opening race Can qualified in 12th position after Superpole Qualifying at the 4.212km long Most circuit. Superpole takes place on Fridays in 2024, after a re-shuffling of the schedule.

Öncü was 12th at the end of lap one, but after running off track at T1 on lap two he dropped to 24th place. He battled on from that point to make fast progress through the field, ending up in 11th place on lap 15 of 19. He held that position to the chequered flag.

Can scored strong points despite his early unwelcome off-track experience but he knew that more was possible given the fact that he and his team had found a strong race pace from their Ninja ZX-6R.

The opening WorldSSP race at Most, which was the final event of the day, featured a warm ambient temperature of 29°C and a hot track temperature of almost 50°C.

Can Öncü, stated: “I made a mistake and went out wide in Turn One. That cost me a lot of positions. It was a little bit difficult for me to accept this because we could have had a much better race. But in racing, things like this can happen. On the positive side, we found a very good set-up today. I am looking forward to the race tomorrow and we will try our best to be out in front. Our speed is there now.”

Swiss rider Marcel Brenner (Viamo Racing by MTM Kawasaki) ended up 26th after Superpole qualifying on Friday but was an early faller in the Saturday race. Gabriele Giannini (Prodina Kawasaki) qualified 30th in Superpole but crashed out of Race One.

One more Most WorldSSP race remains on Sunday 21 July, with the same 15.15 CET start time as Race One.
